The gifts are inspired by Amish, Appalachian, and Japanese quilting traditions, among others, and range from easy pillowcases and covered scrapbooks to simplified (but heirloom-worthy) log cabin and crazy quilts. Hoverson also shares an overview of her approach to color as well as the tools and techniques she used to complete the projects in the book.

not worth the nice photography -
While I really did appreciate the photography-it is beautiful-the book doesn't really have much to offer past that. I was very disappointed.

Unbelievably old and trite projects dressed up in new fabrics. Or, as my granny used to say (back in the day when these patterns were new and fresh), mutton dressed as lamb. Ho, hum. Beginner patterns? More like kindergarten cut and paste. The most exciting thing in the book is a pillowcase. Oh, goodie, lets make a needlebook! Just like we did in Brownies in 1952. Hey, here's an idea! Make the needlebook out of the couple of $10 bills you save by not buying this book. Now, there's a plan.
Clever and informative -
I have had this book for a while and have just ordered another one for my daughter. In addition to having a variety of very pretty projects, the author, Joelle Hoverson, includes a section of pretty concise sewing and quilting instructions. I have had several quilting books and this one really does a good job of explaining the basics. I am a beginner, but I felt bold enough to make the most advanced project. I am impressed with the project and the instructions, both of which have brought me along in developing my new skills. In the end, I will have a quilt that I can be proud of. I can't wait to try other projects in the book.
Great Book! -
After looking through this book many times since I got it, I'm really excited to try some of the projects. Although I'm not sure how a 12-hour quilt is considered a last minute gift. I'm actually more interested in the longer projects than I thought I would be because I'm new at quilting and these look very simple. For more advanced sewers, the beginner projects might be better as inspiration, for example I will do a crayon roll (instead of colored pencils) for my young nieces and nephews.
If you're new to sewing this book is great because a lot of the short projects are very simple, like quilted coasters and small stuffed birds. There weren't a lot of in between projects, it seems like it jumps from quick and easy right to big quilts. But as I said before, the quilts look very simple and have a modern look to them.
Overall, great book but I gave it a 4 because I expected more versatile projects. I don't think I would really give any quilts as gifts, and a lot of the projects are baby oriented. Still a good book to have in your library!

A variety of projects, but a lot of "ditch-stiching" -
This book has many different projects to choose from. Many of the projects are simple quilts. These gifts are generally traditional, not very "trendy", though there are a few unique ideas. (I love the color wheel quilt and a sailboat wall hanging!)
This book does not include assembly diagrams. The instructions are pretty clear, but if you are a visual person, this may be a little difficult.
***If you are a serious quilter, and dislike "stitching-in-the-ditch", this book is probably not for you! Most of her quilted projects call for this practice. I think stitching in the ditch is sloppy, but I will use these patterns and come up with an alternative way to quilt the projects.
If you are considering other popular sewing books, here are some thoughts:
Amy Butler's In-Stitches or Lotta Jansdotter's Simple sewing are other alternatives. They offer ideas for gift projects that are are more modern. The projects are not quilted, and they are more everyday objects. You will find patterns for placemats, napkins, bedside organizers, potholders, pet pillows, various bags and totes. Both books have a project or two that are impractical, but generally good ideas.
All good books. Last-Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts is great for a beginner who wants some simple quilt ideas but nothing too flashy.
