A treasure - 
This is an amazing book. I am a bit biased because I love horses, not in the biblical sense, purely in a platonic and socially acceptable way. I grew up riding horses, not in the catherine the great sort of way, you know, the regular way most people ride horses. I have had such amazing experiences being with these beasts, not bad beasts, you know, beasts as in animals of enormous magnitude and grandeur. For many years I saw the neglect of horses when I worked at Farm Team, a non profit that rehabilitates abandoned livestock by teaching them to play coeducational competitive sports. In fact one of my greatest accomplishments was teaching a group of clydesdales how to play their namesake, Horse, out on the old blacktop next to the barn. Boy could those animals hit a fade away. Hours and hours would go by, just neighing and galloping around and shooting hoops, eating hay, and running around whenever anyone got the inclination, myself included. Now that I'm a state senator I don't get that chance anymore, and I often think back to my salad days with Rusty and Chestnut Dan, the Grifter, Bones, and Josie the Killer. Those ponies really knew how to tie one on. This book really brought back memories for me. Thank you.

The Horses of Proud Spirit -
I absolutely loved this book. I went through a lot of Kleenex. The book is very well-written. It is a quick read if you want, but it really makes you stop and think, laugh, cry. It's amazing that people who have no knowledge of horses get them and then don't know what to do with them. Melanie cries right along with the reader. I'm glad that she has rescued these proud animals and given their lives back to them. I liked the pictures she had in the book, and I'm trying to get the DVD of the horse operation based on the book. I'm also trying to get PBS to show it here.
I'm now reading the sequel book called Hoof Prints, and it is every bit as good as The Horses of Proud Spirit. Thanks, Melanie.
good rescue book -
Excellent and inspiring. The author sometimes focuses a bit too much on the hardships faced by the animals instead of the recovery processes and maturing into the horse they are today, but makes up for it with other chapters regarding just 'the happy stuff'. Definitely worth owning, as well as the second book!

A must read for any animal or horse lover. Moving, gutsy, informative and educational: I couldn't put this book down; I was up all night reading until I finished it. This book will bring you to tears, open your heart and touch your soul. Gives us hope that there are still great people in this country that have heart, integrity and courage to do the right thing in spite of the odds. Everyone involved with anything equine needs to read this book.
