Average Customer Ratings:

In the waning days of summer, 2005, a storm with greater impact than the bomb that struck Hiroshima peels the face off southern Louisiana.
This is the gruesome reality Iberia Parish Sheriff's Detective Dave Robicheaux discovers as he is deployed to New Orleans. As James Lee Burke's new novel, The Tin Roof Blowdown, begins, Hurricane Katrina has left the commercial district and residential neighborhoods awash with looters and predators of every stripe. The power grid of the city has been destroyed, New Orleans reduced to the level of a medieval society. There is no law, no order, no sanctuary for the infirm, the helpless, and the innocent. Bodies float in the streets and lie impaled on the branches of flooded trees. In the midst of an apocalyptical nightmare, Robicheaux must find two serial rapists, a morphine-addicted priest, and a vigilante who may be more dangerous than the criminals looting the city.
In a singular style that defies genre, James Lee Burke has created a hauntingly bleak picture of life in New Orleans after Katrina. Filled with complex characters and depictions of people at both their best and worst, The Tin Roof Blowdown is not only an action-packed crime thriller, but a poignant story of courage and sacrifice that critics are already calling Burke's best work.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS:
If you'd like a depressing book about a natural disaster... -

I honestly got about 20% through the book and quit. I'd had enough. It was just one scene after another about the misery and hopelessness about New Orleans and hurricane Katrina. Homeless people, poverty, people who lost their homes, people whose lives were ruined and on and one. In as far as I got into the book there didn't even seem to be a story per say, just a bunch of random scenes meant to make you more and more depressed about this natural disaster. No thanks.

Vintage Burke. -

I highly recommend this book by James Lee Burke. He is a wonderful writer and makes me feel like I am there. His descriptions of New Iberia and New Orleans are so realistic. The plotting is excellent and Dave Robicheaux is very real to me. His description of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is exceptional.
The Tin Roof Blowdown -

This was my first book by author Burke. It was what I'd hoped it would be--a page-turner with lots of action, a well-crafted plot with sub-plots to keep me on edge. The main characters were well-developed. It made me think, too, about who are the "real" victims, and also to re-think my original take on the Katrina disaster's heros and villans. Overall, a good read.
The Tin Blowdown -

I have never read one of his books before, but it was a book club read. I was disappointed in the political views in the book and some of the grafic reading about Katrina. Even though I was in lower Alabama during Katrina and knew what happening in New Orleans, I wasn't expecting so much detail in his book. I have been assured by others in the book club that his others aren't like this one.
