I am a believer now! -
My son just turned 6 months and had not slept more than 3 hours straight in his entire life. It would take me sometimes over an hour of rocking, breastfeeding, walking, breastfeeding, etc to get him to fall asleep. We would have to put him first in his bouncer and later move him into his crib when he was in a deeper sleep. Half the time he would wake and I would have to breastfeed him back to sleep. Naps were just as bad, if not worse. I was frustrated and hating the night time.
I decided to commit to 3 nights and if there was no improvement than I would drop it. The first night, my son cried in his crib for 25 minutes until he fell asleep. He then woke 3 times. I got up and fed him 2 of those times. Each of the three wakings, he cried for a very short time (maybe 10 minutes max). The second night, he cried for 12 minutes, woke 2 and fed him twice, but he went back down with virtually no fussing. The third night was our worst. He screamed for 26 minutes (I was in hysterics), and then he cried off and on from 11pm to 2am. I was out of my mind and ready to give up, but my husband reminded me of our purpose. The fourth night, my son went to bed without a single tear or fussing, woke up 1, fed once and went right back to sleep. We are on our 7th night and he still goes down without a tear and sleeps virtually through the night. I am waiting a bit to stop the last feeding - I know he doesn't need to eat. AND, to top it all off, my son has begun teething in the middle of all of this!
Naps are still a bit harder, but he is now taking his naps in his crib and usually only takes a few minutes of crying to go down.
I never thought that my son would sleep. I thought he was just a poor sleeper and needy. I believe in this book and its possibilities.

I felt pretty desperate as my five month old son was only sleeping for at most an hour at a time and as little as 10 minutes. We had tried everything and nothing worked. I felt that this was my last resort. We had two nights of crying for about half an hour. I would go and check on him during the designated times. This was definitely hard, but I knew that we had no other choice. The crying quickly shortened. By the third night, he felt asleep on his own with no crying and slept for 7 hours. He awoke, was fed and went back to sleep on his own in a drowsy but awake state. I heard him talking to himself for about 5 minutes and then he put himself to sleep on his own. I am amazed. He does not appear traumatized or upset. He is happier during the day, less fussy and more playful.
Maybe I'll Try Again Later -
We tried this method for a few nights and a few naps when our daughter turned three months old, but it just didn't work for us. Perhaps we didn't give it enough time, but we just couldn't take it. The first night we started at 8:45, and she cried until 3:30 in the morning--she threw up twice during the process and snubbed for hours after we gave up. The next night after four hours, I gave up again, knowing that she was stubborn and would go until 3:30 again if we'd allow it. At four months old we started the No Cry Sleep Solution with better results. After only a week she began sleeping for six hours before waking for a short nursing period, and she is napping in bed for up to two hours each time. She is being put down while asleep now, so maybe we'll try the Ferber method when we start putting her down awake. My friends rave about Ferber, I just didn't have the stomach to make her cry for hours on end.
I don't know if its just me and my baby, or if this method doesn't work -
It is difficult to implement this. And, when babies teethe or are sick (which, unfortunately happens a lot between 6-12 months), it is challenging to implement. I'm breastfeeding and husband and I are both working outside of the home, so I read the book, tried implementation, and I'm getting more sleep, but baby is far from sleeping through...maybe it's just us...

Changed our lives -
We tried Ferber's method when our daughter was 7 or 8 months old and still waking up several times during the night and demanding attention, because the sleep deprivation was even harder on the adults. After the first night, she was sleeping from 8pm until 7am, and it changed our lives! It probably saved our marriage. We had evenings together as a couple, and our daughter, now 13 years old, was sleeping beautifully. When our son was born we "Ferberized" him at the earliest recommended age. He is now 11, and both kids are good sleepers and doing great. Don't let the nay-sayers scare you. Our now middle-school-age kids are wonderful, well-adjusted, smart and funny, and have never, from then to now, shown any sign of the "trauma" some parents worry about. This method can be difficult to live through, but so are many other things you must do for the sake of your children and family. In our case, it was a breeze. I recommend this book to every new parent I meet, even strangers on an elevator!
