A Fine Example of a Memoir Written in Chronological Order -
THE LONGEST TRIP HOME, written by John Grogan (MARLEY AND ME) is a fine example of a well-done memoir told in chronological order, starting in the author's early childhood and ending in his middle age with his father's death. It is humorous (Grogan is good at self-deprecation), telling (lots of details about growing up in a devoutly Catholic household, typical of many other households at the time), and introspective (Grogan traces his separation from the church and how he and his parents came to terms with this).I recommend anyone interested in writing an inspired chronological memoir read THE LONGEST TRIP HOME. Grogan is a talented and skilled writer.

varied opinions -
I was curious about the people who gave this book 1 or 2 stars. Were they all from the Bible Belt? Were they nuns and priests? Were they far right, bible thumping born agains? The answer is "no"...just goes to show that no book is going to please all people.
I actually liked this book more than Marley & Me. Most likely, it's because I was traumatized more by growing up Catholic than I was by my dog. I thought the author accurately and humorously portrayed what growing up in the 50's was like. (despite experiences other readers may have had, shooting a rocket into someone's house WOULD have been a big deal in my youth.)
The ending was particularly well written and it is apparent how much the Grogan's loved and were loved.
The Longest Trip Home -
Good read. The first parts really rang a bell with me. We were the only protestant family in a Catholic neighborhood in the late 50's-late 60's near
Detroit. Some of the neighbors were his family to the T. Many of the memories he has of growing up mirrored some of my own children's who are a little younger than he. I thoroughly enjoyed this sometimes funny, sometimes sad memoir of the Grogan family. He's a good writer. Hope he writes some more.
Good Read - 
Liked it. Liked Marley and Me better. But a good read. If you were raised Catholic you may be able to relate to it better than non-Catholics as it's centered around his over-the-top Catholic upbringing.

I truly enjoyed Grogan's latest work. His honest approach to his family and relationships made the story very relateable. It's a story that truly captures the complex relationships that families share, including the struggle between love and disapproval.
